THIS brief sketch of the architecture and art of South India is more historical than aesthetic; aesthetic appreciation is a matter of individual taste, and the role of the art critic is different from that of the student of its history. Again, though the continuity in the evolution of art forms and the mutual influences of the different schools that flourished in different localities and ages will be taken account of in a general way, no attempt can be made here to study such questions in any detail. Our aim must be to give a general view of the salient features of the different schools and their productions in the light of the most recent studies on the subject.
