In narrating briefly the history of the political and cultural movements in ancient South India in the following pages, the present writer has no thesis to maintain, and any lessons that the story may suggest he is well content to let the reader draw for himself. His endeavour will be to present as simply and clearly as possible a connected narrative of ascertained facts with the minimum of comment necessary to make the story intelligible. Attention will be confined to facts, persons and tendencies of outstanding importance—minor details being everywhere eschewed in order not to distract the attention of the reader by an array of names and details that often serve only to obscure the main trends.
