Stone inscriptions begin to increase in number steadily from the sixth century onwards, but copper-plate records continue to be the mainstay of the historian for some centuries more, and at no time can they be left out of the reckoning. The history of the early Pāṇḍyas from the seventh to the tenth century A.D. rests altogether on two long copper-plate records which are both bilingual and employ the Grantha script for the Sanskrit and the Vaṭṭeḻuttu for the Tamil parts; so also the history of the contemporary Pallava line of Simhavishnu is derived more from copper plates than from stone inscriptions.
