¹ 'The Queen [of Agnimitra, son of Pushyamitra] has a brother of inferior caste, Vīrasena by name; he has been placed by the king in command of a frontier fortress on the banks of the Mandākinī' (Introd. to *Mālavikāgnimitra*). Tawney (transl., p. 6) notes that 'the Mandākanī here probably means the Narmadā (Nerbudda). One of the Bombay manuscripts reads the Prākrit equivalent of Narmadā'. But Mr. Pargiter knows only two rivers named Mandākinī, namely, one in the Bānda District of Bundelkhaṇḍ, and the other, a southern tributary of the Godāvarī (*J. R. A. S.*, 1894, p. 260).
