Pushyamitra did not enjoy his dominions unchallenged. In or about 165 B. C. Khāravela, King of Kalinga, who was descended from the Cheta (Chaitra) family, invaded his territory and advanced to within a few miles of Pātaliputra. Pushyamitra made a strategic withdrawal to Mathurā, and Khāravela apparently considered it wise at the moment not to proceed farther than the Barābar Hills (Gorathagiri).
