Craft-guilds were a feature of the age. At Govardhan, near Nāsik, there were guilds of oil-pressers, hydraulic machine-artisans, potters, and weavers; while at Junnar there were similar guilds of corn-dealers, bamboo-workers, and braziers. These guilds acted as banks, in which money could be deposited at interest, such deposits being always made in the indigenous currency (*kārshāpanas*). Permanent endowments, such as those for religious purposes, were publicly proclaimed and registered in the records of a *nigama-sabha* or town-assembly.
