¹ The substantial controversy is between the scholars who place the accession of Kanishka in a. d. 78 and those who date it later in about a. d. 120. It is possible that the Kushān kings may have used a special era, distinct from the Śaka, but it is unlikely. If such an era was used, it began after, not before, a. d. 78. Sir J. H. Marshall, Director-General of the Archaeological Survey, has been convinced by the direct evidence of the stratification of the remains of Taxila that Kanishka reigned in the second rather than the first century of the Christian era. A nearly complete list of the dated inscriptions will be found in the author's paper on the Kushān period, cited *ante*, p. 266. For records of the third year of Kanishka at Sārnāth near Benares, see *Ep. Ind.*, viii, 173. Other additions also have been made to the list.
