¹ The column still stands at Bhitarī, in the Ghāzīpur District, to the east of Benares, but the statue has disappeared (Cunningham, *Archaeol. Rep.*, vol. i, pl. xxix). The inscription on the column, which records the events related in the text, has been edited and translated by Fleet (*Gupta Inscriptions*, No. 13). The allusion to the Krishna legend is interesting. See *J. R. A. S.*, 1907, p. 976.
