The precise identity of Budhagupta is as yet undetermined. He may possibly have been governor of Mālwa under Skandagupta, and after disowning allegiance to Narasimhagupta and Kumāragupta II, whose hold on Mālwa was doubtless precarious, have finally overthrown Kumāragupta II. It seems tolerably certain that his stronghold was in Mālwa, that his sway there lasted till A. D. 494, if not later, and that by A. D. 476 he was in possession of Benares.²
