The serious misunderstanding of the story above alluded to consisted in the erroneous belief held by Beal and several other writers that Mo-la-p'o, or Western Mālava, was identical with the kingdom of Ujjain, otherwise known as Avanti or Eastern Mālava. Beal actually designated Sīlāditya of Mo-la-p'o as 'Sīlāditya of Ujjain', forgetting that Hiuen Tsang described the territory of Ujjain as a separate kingdom equal in size to Mo-la-p'o, and in his time ruled by a Brahman Rāja. Sīlāditya, the former Rāja of Valabhī and Mo-la-p'o, was considered to be a Kshatriya, and there is no reason to suppose that he had anything to do with Ujjain.
