This evidence points to the fact that the Gupta king who patronized him was the learned and accomplished Samudragupta, son and successor of Chandra-gupta I, who may have been actually known as Vikramāditya. That title, even if not actually assumed by Chandra-gupta I, may have been traditionally assigned to him, as being a recognized title applicable to any Gupta king. Without doubt Samudragupta was actually in possession of both Ayodhyā and Sravastī, and probably his father was so likewise : and if the recorded traditions connecting Vasubandhu with a Gupta king are well founded, it follows that Samudragupta in his youth must have borne the titles of both Chandraprakāśa (-prabhāva) and Bālāditya or Parāditya.
