¹ This summary statement, so far as it differs from current accounts, rests upon the authority of Raverty, *Notes on Afghanistan*, p. 320. Alberūnī (*India*, transl. Sachau, i, 135) tells us that Jaipāl's son, 'Shāh Ānandapāla, who ruled in our time,' had as teacher a grammarian named Ugrabhūti, whose book was made fashionable in Kashmīr by liberal donations from the royal pupils to the pundits.
