An important consequence of the Muslim conquest of Kanauj was the migration of the bulk of the Gaharwār clan to the deserts of Mārwār in Rājputāna, where they settled and became known as Rāthōrs. The state so founded, now generally designated by the name of its capital, Jodhpur, is one of the most important principalities of Rājputāna.¹ Similar clan movements, necessitated by the pressure of Muhammadan armies, which were frequent at this period, account to a large extent for the existing distribution of the Rājpūt clans.
