¹ *J. A. S. B.*, part i, vol. xlvii (1878), p. 400; *Imp. Gaz.*, s. v. Rāmpāl. According to Mahā. Haraprasad Shastri, Ballāl Sen 'conquered Northern Bengal with the help of the Kaivartas, and tried his best to make a clean caste of them' (Introd. p. 15 to N. N. Vasu, *Modern Buddhism and its Followers in Orissa*). The Māhishyas or Chāsi-Kaivartas deny this and claim that they were a clean caste from time immemorial. They declare themselves to be quite distinct in origin from the Kewats (Jaliya-Kaivartas, &c.), and state that the Pāla kings belonged to their caste. They are hostile to the memory of Ballāl Sen.
