The wonderful caves in the Ajaṇṭā valley were duly admired by Hiuen Tsang, who visited the court of Pulakēsin II in the year A. D. 641. The king's head-quarters at that time were not at Vātāpi, but at another city, which has been identified for good reasons with Nāsik.
