¹ The epithet or title *vallabha*, used either singly or in composition with a noun like *śrī* or *prithivī*, was borrowed by the Rāshtrakūtas from the preceding dynasty, the Chalukyas of Vātāpi. Muhammadan authors usually describe a Hindu king as *Rāi* or *Rāe* (*Bom. Gaz.* (1896), vol. i, part ii, p. 209). The accounts of the early Arab geographers and the historians of Sind are translated in Elliot, *Hist. of India*, vol. i. Sir R. G. Bhandarkar was the first to explain the meaning of ‘Balharā’.
