¹ *Keraḷa* is the Kanarese form of the Tamil *Cheraḷa*. The country was anciently called Cheraḷam or Cheraḷa-nāḍu, and the kings were Cheraḷ-ādan or Cheraḷ-Irum-Porrai, *Cheraḷam* means 'mountain-range', and so is equivalent to Malabar (Pundit D. Savariroyan in *Tamilian Antiquary*, No. 1, pp. 69–71).
