The most ancient Chera capital is said to have been Vanji, Vanchi, or Karūr, now represented by the deserted village Tiru-Karūr, high up the Periyar, about 28 miles ENE. of Cochin. Tiruvanji-kalam, near the mouth of the Periyar, was a later capital. Some writers have erroneously believed Karūr in Coimbatore to have been the Chera capital, but there is no doubt that that opinion is mistaken.¹
