Tamil literature represents, as already observed (*ante*, p. 452), that Chenkuttuvan, an exceptionally powerful Chera king, was contemporary more or less with Nedum-cheliyan, the Pāndya, and Nedumudi Killi Chola, the grandson of Karikāla, as well as with Gajabāhu I of Ceylon. The authentic political history of the Chera or Kerala kingdom, therefore, like that of the other Tamil monarchies, cannot at present be carried back farther than the first two centuries of the Christian era. Even about the events of that period very little is recorded.
