The death of Vīrarājendra (A. D. 1070) was followed by a disputed succession and civil war. Vikramāditya Chalukya, having established himself on the throne of the Deccan, came to the aid of his brother-in-law, Adhirājendra, and succeeded in making him king of the Chola realm (1072). But the new sovereign proved to be unpopular, and was assassinated two years later (1074). With him the direct line in male succession of the great mediaeval Cholas came to an end.
