² For the history of Adhirājendra, Kulottuṅga, and Rāmānuja, I follow Bhaṭṭanātha Svamin, 'The Cholas and the Chaḷukyas in the Eleventh Century' (*Ind. Ant.*, 1912, pp. 217–27). His article is based on a contemporary metrical chronicle, entitled *Divyasūricharita*, of which he is about to publish a critical edition. The text was printed in Mysore in 1885. The title Kulottuṅga means 'highest in his family'.
