² *Report on Epigraphy in Madras G. O., Public*, No. 518, dated July 18, 1905, p. 47; *Archaeol. S. Annual Rep.*, 1903–4, p. 203. In 1882, when Mr. Sewell inserted a note on Mahendravādi in his *Lists of Antiquities, Madras*, vol. i, p. 162, the Pallava origin of the remains was not known. Three gold coins, ascribed to Mahendravarman, are mentioned in *A. S. Prog. Rep. W. I.*, 1917–18, pp. 17, 18. Jouveau-Dubreuil (*Pallava Antiq.*, vol. ii (1918)) distinguishes three styles of Pallava building, with sharply marked characteristics, viz. (i) Mahendra, (ii) Māmallapuram (Narasinha), (iii) Rājasinha. One example of a fourth style belongs to the period of Aparājita, *c.* A. D. 850–900.
