² Most of the Greek and Roman notices of India have been collected, translated, and discussed by McCrindle in six useful books, published between 1882 and 1901, and dealing with (1) Ktēsias, (2) *Indika* of Megasthenes and Arrian, (3) *Periplus of the Erythraean Sea*, (4) Ptolemy's *Geography*, (5) Alexander's Invasion, and (6) Ancient India, as described by other classical writers. The latest version of the *Periplus* is that by W. H. Schoff (1912).
