³ Menapia, Ptol. vi, 11, 8. I cannot explain it, for I do not propose to bring Menapii from the North Sea to Bactria, even though Goths from the Vistula have been brought to India (p. 257 n. 2). Certainly a column with an Indian inscription and reliefs was dug up at Ostend in 1793 (Baron de la Pylaie, *Rev. Arch.* 1848 ii p. 456); but doubtless the suggestion that it was the discarded ballast of a modern ship is correct.
