¹ Tarn, *Military Developments* p. 153. The satraps of Persis and of every satrapy east of Media, after raising 8000 horse for Peithon (Diod. XVIII, 7, 3), could only raise another 4600 for a life or death struggle against him (*ib.* XIX, 14, 8), a total of only 12,600 for Persis and the whole East, even if the numbers do not overlap. The total cavalry at Ipsus, with all Asia contributing, was 20,500, or only twice what Bactria alone gave Euthydemus, and some of it was certainly European.
