¹ Tomaschek, *Wien S.B.* cxvi, 1888, p. 769, proposed to read Φοῦνοι = Οὖννοι of Cosmas = Huns. I do not know of anyone who has accepted this; the word Οὖννοι is many centuries later than Apollodorus, and the Hiung-nu were not in the Tarim basin till some time between their final defeat of the Yueh-chi, 176 or 174, and 138, when they caught Chang-k’ien; see p. 279 and also Herzfeld, *Sakastan* p. 14.
