These inscriptions do not mean that the Greek conquest had extended to the latitude of Bombay, or that there was a Greek province south of Surastrene; these Yavana merchants had doubtless come south for the sake of trade, primarily pepper.¹ Of the donors in the Karli cave, seven, including the five Yavanas, come from an unknown town Dhenukākā, which has accordingly been supposed to be a near-by trading port on the coast; if there is anything in this, the natural location of such a port, looking at the relative positions of Karli, Junnar, and Nasik, would be somewhere about the Bombay inlet (see further p. 372).
