¹ Eratosthenes called Bactria and Sogdiana ὁμόγλωττοι παρὰ μικρόν, Strabo xv, 724. H. W. Bailey, *op. cit.* p. 893, referred ‘Bactria’ here to the Kushans, on the ground that Strabo wrote a century after the conquest of Bactria. The passage was in fact written by Eratosthenes about a century *before* the conquest.
