⁵ Hirth p. 108 §102; Wylie p. 46. De Groot, p. 35, has gone most curiously astray here; he translates: ‘Das Volk achtet die jungen Frauen hoch und die von ihnen ausgesprochenen Meinungen, die kräftigen Männer treffen darauf die Entscheidung.’ This is the famous passage in Tacitus on the Teutonic virgins (Germ. 8, 5) transferred to an alien world. Franke notes the error and gives once again the real meaning.
