⁴ It is interesting that Marshall, *JRAS* 1914 p. 977, and Rapson, *CHI* p. 571, once inclined to think that the Vikrama Era might mark Azes' accession, which, on the view that Azes succeeded Maues, would mean that Maues died in or about 58 B.C. (so Marshall, *ASI* 1912–13 p. 7). But it is now practically certain that Azes was much later, as will be seen.
