In another form of literature modern study has entirely shifted its ground. No one would now ask whether India derived her fables and folktales from the Greeks, for it has been recognised that each individual story presents its own problems and must be treated on its own merits;² one may have originated in India or even in China³ and travelled to Greece, another may have originated in Greece and travelled to India, while others may have started in Babylonia or Egypt or Iran and spread in any or every direction. Tracing the paths of these stories, which range over many centuries, is a fascinating pursuit, but has nothing to do with what we are considering.
