¹ The only Greek historian known to me who has noticed the matter is E. Cavaignac, who said in 1933 that *somehow* the Gandhāra school *must* be connected with the Bactrian Greeks (*Indian Art and Letters* VII p. 125), *i.e.* the Bactrian Greeks in India. This is the view for which Sir J. Marshall for long contended, *e.g.* *JRAS* 1909 p. 1060; and in 1914 A. Foucher (II, 443) made it the dominant view for a good many years. But Marshall, under the influence of the hellenised art of Parthian Taxila, has now changed his view and puts the origin of Gandhāra art in the period of Parthian rule, first century A.D.: *ASI* 1930-4 (pub. 1936) p. 151.
