³ There is an excellent exposition of the question and arguments in de la Vallée-Poussin, pp. 244 *sqq.*; I have however ventured to take it my own way. The question has sometimes been mixed up with the very different question whether Indians made statues of their gods before Greeks came, *i.e.* before Alexander. I think the evidence is sufficient that they did; but this has not, and cannot have, any bearing on the question of the Buddha-statue, for Buddha was still being represented by symbols at Sanchi (first century B.C.).
