¹ SEG VII, 10. ² A. D. Nock, JEA XV, 1929, p. 223; Harvard Theolog. Rev. XXVII, 1934, p. 100. ³ Acts ii, 9. ⁴ SEG VII, 26. ⁵ SEG VII, 12. Another Persian, Goras, is mentioned in SEG VII, 13 l. 13, where his son has a Greek name, Ariston. Cumont thought this meant that Goras had married a Greek woman; if so, it would be of importance that the son was named, against the rule, from the mother’s side. But it probably only means that Goras had adopted Greek culture; compare the men with Greek names but Cappadocian fathers at Anisa, Michel 546 (p. 19), and the common custom of Asiatics under Roman rule giving their sons Latin names. ⁶ SEG VII, 17, 183 B.C., ’Απόλλωνι καὶ ’Αρτέμιδι Δαίτταις; on this word in OGIS 244 see Cumont, CR Ac. Inscr. 1931 pp. 282-3, and compare ’Αρτέμιδι καὶ ’Απόλλωνι ἀρχηγοῖς at Doura, SEG VII, 352. ⁷ SEG VII, 11. ⁸ Shown by the terms of the manumission documents. See Cumont, CR Ac.
