³ The operative word at Susa, ἀφιέρωσεν—‘consecrate’ instead of ‘dedicate’—seems unknown in Greece; it is not given in Calderini’s table, *op. cit.* p. 438, though on p. 442 he quotes a formula at Chaeronea, τὰν ἀνάθεσιν ποιούμενος, in which ἀφιέρωσιν is sometimes substituted for ἀνάθεσιν, and though occasionally in ἀνάθεσις-manumissions the slave is expressed to become ἱερὸς καὶ ἐλεύθερος instead of ἐλεύθερος alone. Perhaps ἀφιέρωσεν has no especial significance; but might it not be a relic of the old Oriental form at Susa?
