¹ Justin xv, 4, 20: Sic adquisito regno Sandracottus ea tempestate qua Seleucus futurae magnitudinis fundamenta iaciebat Indiam possidebat cum quo facta pactione Seleucus...in bellum Antigoni descendit. The form of the second mention of Seleucus shows that ea tempestate goes with adquisito regno and not with Indiam possidebat, as taken by Sourindra Nath Ray, *IHQ* xi, 1935, p. 211 and by H. C. Raychaudhuri, *Indian Culture* ii, 1936, p. 559, who are using McCrindle’s translation, not always a safe guide. But it was a letter from Mr S. N. Ray in 1934 which set me on enquiry.
