Paunikyā, Bhaunikyā, and Maukharyā, under the aphorism (Pāṇini, IV. I. 79) explaining the formation of the words with the *syan* suffix. The *Kāśikāvṛtti* of Jayāditya and Vāmana, “written before I-tsing visited India,”¹ again cites the term, under the same rule of Pāṇini, as an instance of *Gotrāvayava*, i.e. non-famous *gotras* or names, *kulas* or families. From these references it has been conjectured that the term Maukhari was “possibly known to Pāṇini and also Patañjali”² who have been assigned to about the sixth century B. C. and *circa* 150 B. C. respectively.
