∗ The word Chāta or Chātra as it some times occurs means unquestionably the police-man. It occurs in H. C. also (p. 286) as noticed further on. It occurs also in the Yājñavalkya Smṛiti, but I am afraid it is wrongly interpreted by Vijñāneśvara who lived in the 12th Century.
