Nurpur :— The ancient name of this state was Udumbara. The chief city is now called Pathānkot which is situated in a narrow neck of land 16 miles in width which divides the valleys of the Bias and the Ravi. It is a great emporium of trade between the villages of Chambā and Kangra in the hills and Lahore and Jullandar in the plains”. The name Pathān is also written Paithan which is clearly an abbreviation of Pratisththana and is the same name as that of Paithan on the Godavarī.
