The twentieth century has seen the Church continue to adapt itself to the changing conditions of the world. The pontificates of Pius X, Benedict XV, Pius XI, and Pius XII have each in their own way contributed to this process of adaptation. The Church has had to face the challenges of two world wars, the rise of totalitarian regimes, and the spread of communism. It has had to deal with the problems of a secularized society and the growth of a new scientific and technological culture.
