This *Rākshasa* marriage of Indra would seem to show that by *c.* A.D. 715 he had already become powerful enough to challenge the power of the Chālukyas of Gujarāt and the Maitrakas of Valabhi. His success in this affair must have added to his prestige and reputation and implanted in his mind the seeds of greater ambition. How it enabled him to extend his kingdom northwards so as to include most of the Marāṭhī-speaking districts of Madhya Pradesh has already been shown above.
