The principal deities worshipped by Hindus were Viṣṇu, Śiva, Lakshmī, and the Sun. Pandharpur had already become a centre of Pāṇḍuraṅga worship. In the lower strata of society deities going back to animistic times were worshipped, as also those who were supposed to be responsible for diseases and epidemics. To appease these last, animal sacrifices were indeed frequently performed.
