v1.c11.s8.14

Permāḍi's son was Bijjaḷa, whose correct name appears to have been Vijayāditya,³ as would appear from a record of A.D. 1149. It occurs also as Bijja, Bijjaṇa, Vijjaḷa, and Vijjaṇa. In the course of his ambitious and eventful career he assumed the biruda of Tribhuvanamalla and the titles *Bhujabalachakravartin*, ‘the emperor of the strong arm’, and *Kalachurya-chakravartin*, ‘the Kalachurya emperor’, which were sometimes combined into *Kalachurya-bhujabala-chakravartin*. Among his other designations may be noted *Sanivāra-siddhi* and *Giridurga-malla*, apparently adopted from the Hoysalas, and *Niśśaṅkamalla*.¹ As Bijjaḷa ended his career by usurping the sovereignty of the Chāḷukyas, it will be interesting to trace the successive steps by which he reached this final goal of his ambition.
