The last inscriptions of Bijjaḷa belonging to his twelfth regnal year bear dates in A.D. 1167 or early 1168.¹ Fleet placed Bijjaḷa's abdication in favour of his son Sovideva about this time on the strength of an inscription of Ś. 1091 (Sarvadhāri, Vaiśākha, probably 24 April, A.D. 1168) saying that 'while still happily reigning over the whole earth with undivided lordship and with the single umbrella of sole sovereignty, Bijjaḷa transferred the burden of government to his dear or favourite son Sovideva'. Other inscriptions show that the Sarvajit saṃvatsara was reckoned as the first year of Sovideva.²
