Ptolemy knows these cities, as well as Nāsika, Banavasi, and Pityndra, and mentions in addition Hippokoura, the royal seat of Baleokouros, Modogoulla, Bardamana, and Korounkala. Hippokoura has been identified by some with Hippargi in the Bijāpur District and by others with Kolhāpur. It may really be a form by metathesis of Koppāraka which gave its name to a *bhukti* in the days of Dantidurga (A.D. 754). This could not have lain very far from Peth in the southern part of the Sātāra District and the river Warnā which separates the Sātāra District from the Kolhāpur State.¹ Modogoulla has been identified by some with Mudgal in the Raichūr *Doāb* and by others with Mudhol on the banks of the Ghātprabhā. Bardamana is very probably the Vardhamānapura of the Hanamkoṇḍa inscription of A.D. 1163, represented either by Vardhanpet, twenty miles south-west of Anmakoṇḍa, or by Waddamarri fifty miles from the same city. Korounkala has been identified with the famous city of Warangal in the vicinity of Hanamkoṇḍa which was the metropolis of the Kākatīya kings and of Telin̄gāna before the rise of Golconda and Hyderabad (Bhāga-nagara).
