² The Kshatrapas of Surāṣṭra and Malwa are generally called the ‘Western Kshatrapas’, as distinguished from the ‘Northern Kshatrapas’ or Kshatrapas of Taxilā and Mathurā. The Western Kshatrapas included at least two distinct families—the Khakharāta to which Bhūmaka and Nahapāna belonged, and Karddamaka, to which Chaṣṭana and his descendants were affiliated.
