v1.c8.s13.16
Districts were in charge of officers of the central government probably designated as *santakas*. They were heads of the general administration and were responsible for the maintenance of law and order and the collection of land revenue. Members of the police and military force (*chaṭāḥ* and *bhaṭāḥ*) helped them in this work and worked under their general direction. The central government controlled the district administration through its inspecting staff, which has been already referred to above.
