The visits of the inspecting or detective staff were usually recognized functions. The expenses connected with their stay had to be borne by the villagers; the donees of the religious grants are seen to have been exempted from such payments. The inspectors had also to be provided with free labour and transport (*begār*) in order to enable them to move on to their next halting-place.
