v1.c8.s13.50

A few words may be added about the position of women. Pre-puberty marriages gradually became the order of the day in our age, at least in Brāhman families. This put an end to the education and Upanayana of girls. The widow's right to inherit the property of her husband was being advocated in our age, but was meeting with strenuous opposition. The satī custom was followed in rare cases in Kṣattriya families. The paintings in Ajaṇṭā caves show that women commanded respect in society.
