³ Hoards of Roman coins have been discovered in several places in South India; similarly E. Chāḷukyan coins bearing the legend *Chāḷukya Chandra* (Śaktivarman I) have been unearthed in Burma. It would be ridiculous to argue on the evidence of these that the authority of the Roman emperors or of Śaktivarman I extended over South India and Burma respectively.
